The Association of the Louisville Orchestra is proud to announce the 2008 - 2009 Young Artist Competition. The competition take place in the South Hall at the School of Music and will be held on the 27th of September beginning at 1:00 to 6:00 pm.  Those students who have been invited to play for the finals recital will be heard by a second set of judges  on the 28th of September at 3:00 PM.  The deadline for entering is September 20th.   The winners will perform with the Louisville Orchestra. To be eligible to compete, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be in 5th through 12th grade
  
• Play piano, percussion, winds, brass, strings, or harp
  
• Reside in or currently studying with a teacher in Louisville or the surrounding counties (within a radius of 130 miles from Louisville), including counties in Ohio and Indiana.

Every applicant will perform on the first day of the competition. The judges will select up to three winners for each division to play in the finals recital on the second day. There will be two divisions: Junior (students 5th-8th grades) and Senior (students 9th- 12th grades).

The judges will be professional musicians who have no students entered in the division they are judging. They will comment on various aspects of the student’s performance, and each student will receive copies of their comment sheets.

The music performed must be one memorized movement from the standard concerto repertoire for orchestra. Each student provides his/her own accompanist and should list the accompanist’s name on the application.

Students will need an extra copy of the music for the judges which will be returned after the performance.
