César Franck Symphony in D Minor
Leonard Bernstein Serenade (after Plato's Symposium)
Leonard Bernstein Divertimento for Orchestra
The three pieces on today’s concert are monuments. César Franck’s only symphony has been described as a “cathedral in sound.” Constructed from the smallest building block of three pitches, it achieves the towering heights of late nineteenth century French symphonic music. The two pieces by Leonard Bernstein are also monuments. The Serenade pays tribute to love as described by the Greek philosopher Plato and to a couple dear to Bernstein and to classical music. Bernstein’s Divertimento is a monument that honors the Boston Symphony Orchestra at their centennial celebration, which occurred in 1980. To read the full program notes click here.
