Astor Piazzolla Aconcagua: Concerto for bandoneon
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Francesca di Rimini
Jacques Offenbach Orpheus in the Underworld: Overture
Program Notes:
Three of the pieces on today’s concert have the same theme: they are musical stories about people condemned to hell. Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan portrays the rake who is finally taken down by the dead father of one of his conquests. Tchaikovsky’s piece is a musical version of Dante’s tale about the woman whose marital infidelity caused her and her lover to spend eternity being whipped by winds. Finally, the Overture to Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld captures the lively themes of his tongue-in-cheek satire of the Greek myth. In the middle of these woeful wailings, Piazzolla’s Concerto for Bandoneon will sparkle and seduce with the sounds of Argentinean tango (for more click here).
