Morton Gould Symphonette No. 2 (Second American Symphonette)

William Schuman Concerto for Violin

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, op. 64

Program Notes:

Today’s program includes two pieces from the heyday of composition in mid-twentieth century United States and one of the blockbusters of symphonic writing.  Morton Gould and William Schuman both captured the pulse of America—Gould first with his jazzy little symphony of 1938 and Schuman just after World War II with a more serious but ultra-romantic violin concerto.  The concert finishes with Russian composer Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s dynamic Symphony no. 5 whose four movements are focused by a musical motto (for more click here).
