What is MakingMUSIC?

The MakingMUSIC program blends classroom-based learning with the excitement of a live concert, all tailored to meet the needs of Louisville’s 4th and 5th graders. Through a partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), the program is available to all JCPS elementary students at no cost, ensuring that every student experiences live orchestral music as part of their education.

Educational Classroom Visits

As part of MakingMUSIC, Louisville Orchestra musicians bring music directly to students through interactive classroom visits. These sessions are designed to make learning about music engaging and accessible by offering:

  • Instrument Demonstrations: Musicians introduce students to various orchestral instruments.
  • Interactive Performances: Musicians perform and discuss musical concepts with students in an accessible way.
  • Hands-On Learning: Students can ask questions, participate, and experience music up close.

Annual MakingMUSIC Concert

Held at The Kentucky Center, the annual MakingMUSIC concert is a cornerstone of the program introducing young students to a professional orchestra experience:

  • Classical and Contemporary Pieces: The concert program is thoughtfully curated to include a mix of traditional classical works and contemporary compositions.
  • Student Performers: Some concerts include performances by student musicians and composers, enhancing engagement.
  • Teacher Support: Teachers are provided with a guide and classroom activities to prepare students for the concert, enhancing the educational impact.
