Bob Bernhardt

Principal Pops Conductor

About Bob

Principal Pops Conductor since 1996

With the 2025-26 season, Bob Bernhardt celebrates his 45th consecutive season with the Louisville Orchestra, a relationship unparalleled in its longevity, and as cherished as ever. Bob’s consistency, musicianship, humor and joyful enthusiasm have been integral to the orchestra’s success, and it all continues now into his 29th year as Principal Pops Conductor, following roles as Assistant and Associate Conductor, and Principal Guest Conductor with Kentucky Opera.

Beyond Louisville, Bob is in his 11th season as Pops Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony; his 19th season with the Edmonton Symphony (Alberta, Canada) as Symphony Under the Sky Festival Conductor and guest conductor on several subscription series annually; and Music Director Emeritus of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera where he was Music Director for 19 seasons.

His distinguished career has included Music Directorships with the Tucson and Amarillo Symphonies, Artistic Directorships with the Rochester Philharmonic and Lake Placid Sinfonietta, and Artist-in-Residence at Lee University.

A passionate opera conductor, Bob led productions with Kentucky Opera for 18 consecutive seasons and 19 seasons with his own company in Chattanooga.

He holds a Master’s degree with honors from the University of Southern California and a BA in Fine Arts from Union College where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude.  In his senior year, he was captain of the soccer team and was selected an Academic All-American in baseball. While all the research is not in, Bob believes he is the only symphony conductor in history to have been invited to spring training with the Kansas City Royals. After several days, the Royals suggested to him a career in music.

Bob and his wife, Nora, live in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
