About Jude

Jude Vaclavik is an arts executive, composer, educator, and advocate for new music whose career bridges artistic leadership, business development, publishing, fundraising, and nonprofit management. His work has spanned many of the world's leading music organizations, including Universal Music Group, The Juilliard School, Boosey & Hawkes, and Houston Grand Opera, where he has built a reputation for championing artists, cultivating creative partnerships, and advancing the future of classical music.

Most recently, Vaclavik served as Vice President of U.S. Classical Publishing and Promotion at Universal Music Group, where he led one of the fastest-growing classical music publishing businesses in the industry. He oversaw business strategy, artist acquisition, international promotion, and partnerships for a roster of many of today's leading composers, helping drive sustained growth while building long-term relationships across the global performing arts community.

Vaclavik's experience spans fundraising, artistic planning, music publishing, digital media production, education, and arts administration. At Juilliard, he served in several leadership roles, including Artistic Producer for Digital Content, where he helped develop internationally recognized digital and educational initiatives while teaching orchestration and composition in the Evening Division.

A composer himself, Vaclavik has received commissions and performances from organizations including the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet Choreographic Institute, The Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, and universities and performing arts organizations across the United States. He is the recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Award and has remained a passionate advocate for living composers throughout his career.

Vaclavik earned Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Music Composition from The Juilliard School, where he was a CV Starr Doctoral Fellow. He serves on the Board of Directors of AFA Texas and previously served as Composition Consultant for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

Vaclavik begins his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Louisville Orchestra on July 15, 2026, where he will partner with Music Director Teddy Abrams, the Orchestra's musicians, Board of Directors, staff, and community to build upon the organization's legacy of artistic innovation and shape its next chapter.

"The opportunities ahead are extraordinary. We will continue bringing world-class artists to Louisville, investing in new music through initiatives like the Creators Corps, and creating experiences that inspire deeper connections with our community. The Louisville Orchestra has earned a national reputation for innovation and artistic excellence, and I look forward to helping share that story with audiences here at home and around the world."

Q&A with Jude

Why did you choose the Louisville Orchestra?

The Louisville Orchestra has earned a national reputation for artistic excellence, innovation, and community impact. From bold programming and new commissions to education initiatives and performances across the Commonwealth, it's an organization that continually asks how an orchestra can serve its community in meaningful ways. That spirit of creativity and purpose is what drew me to Louisville, and I'm honored to be part of the next chapter.

What excites you most about leading the Louisville Orchestra?

I'm excited to work alongside Music Director Teddy Abrams, our exceptional musicians, dedicated staff, Board of Directors, and the many supporters who make this Orchestra possible. Together, they've built an organization with remarkable momentum. I look forward to listening, learning, and helping expand the Orchestra's impact while ensuring it continues to thrive for future generations.

What does an orchestra mean to a community?

At its best, an orchestra is much more than a concert presenter. It is a cultural gathering place, a source of civic pride, and an organization that brings people together through shared experiences. Music has a unique ability to inspire curiosity, spark conversation, and create connections across generations and backgrounds. I believe the Louisville Orchestra plays an important role in strengthening our community, both on stage and far beyond it.

Your career has included music publishing, fundraising, education, and nonprofit leadership. How has that prepared you for this role?

Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to work with artists, educators, donors, and cultural organizations in many different settings. While each role has been unique, they've all centered on the same goal: helping great music reach more people and ensuring arts organizations have the resources to flourish. Those experiences have given me a broad perspective on leadership, collaboration, and long term sustainability, all of which are essential to leading a modern orchestra.

What would you say to someone who's never attended a Louisville Orchestra concert?

I'd say, come exactly as you are. You don't need to know anything about classical music to have a meaningful experience. Whether it's your first concert or your hundredth, there's something powerful about sharing live music with others. The Louisville Orchestra offers performances that are welcoming, exciting, and full of discovery, and I'd love for you to experience one for yourself.
