Known for her signature contralto vocals and deeply personal songwriting, her enduring hits include "You're So Vain," "Nobody Does It Better," and "Anticipation".
Born in New York City, Carly Elisabeth Simon grew up in the affluent Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. She is the daughter of Richard L. Simon, co-founder of the legendary publishing empire Simon & Schuster, and Andrea Heinemann Simon, an amateur singer and civil rights activist.
In 1963, she and her sister Lucy formed a folk duo known as The Simon Sisters. They were signed to Kapp Records and released a few albums together before Carly decided to pursue a solo career. After initially facing rejection from major labels, she signed with Elektra Records and released her self-titled debut album in 1971. The single "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" became a massive hit and earned her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
