Kathleen Karr

Kathy Karr is the Principal Flutist of the Louisville Orchestra. For 25 years, she taught flute at the University of Louisville's School of Music. A founding member of the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, she currently performs with the NouLou Chamber Players. She has taught flute and chamber music at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, and has performed as guest flutist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Huntsville Symphony and the Orquestra Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City. She has performed recitals and masterclasses in Mexico, Israel and across the U.S.A. Kathy is an Altus Flutes Performing Artist.

 

What do you enjoy most about performing with the Louisville Orchestra?  

It is an honor to be a member of the Louisville Orchestra and performing with my fantastic colleagues! They inspire me every day.

In what ways do you think the Louisville Orchestra can make the greatest impact on our community?

Performing music to every corner of our city and state connects all of us. Everyone loves music - it is very powerful!

What is your favorite type of orchestral music to perform, and why?  

I love performing symphonies and tone poems because I love the colors of the orchestra surrounding me.

Who is your favorite composer or musician?

There are so many favorite composers! Mozart, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Mahler to name a few!

Do you have a Louisville Orchestra or event that is especially meaningful or memorable?

John Williams conducted our orchestra many years ago. He conducted his many orchestral works - it was standing room only in the Kentucky Center!

What are some things that inspire you as a musician?

I am inspired by my colleagues in the Louisville Orchestra. They all sound amazing and work hard to be their best. I love it!

What do you love most about being part of the Louisville community?  

Louisville is a very supportive community. We look out for each other and take care of each other.

What’s something unique, surprising, fun, or interesting about you?  

I have four adorable grandchildren!

What are some of your hobbies outside the LO?

I love running organized runs - 5Ks to half marathons. I love riding my e-bike with my husband, Matthew Karr. I love spending time with family and friends.

How do you stay connected with the community outside of your performances?  

I enjoy volunteering for my synagogue, and the Jewish community.

I love Klezmer Music!
