Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) was a 20th-century American composer, conductor, and educator, best known for bridging classical and popular music, most notably with West Side Story. As the first American-born Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, he transformed it into a global institution. He also famously educated audiences through televised concerts.
