Bassist Michael Chmilewski brings decades of rich musical experience to the stage. His early training included a summer with the Colorado Philharmonic, and he appeared as a bass soloist with the Elkhart (IN) Symphonette. Over the course of his career, he has performed in an extraordinary variety of settings—from weddings and nightclubs to operas, ballets, and chamber ensembles. For the past 48 years, he has been a dedicated member of the Louisville Orchestra, where his artistry and versatility have made him a valued presence across generations of performances.
What do you enjoy most about performing with the Louisville Orchestra?
Performing great music with great musicians and being able to share it all with our audiences.
In what ways do you think the Louisville Orchestra can make the greatest impact on our community?
Music is about connections. Using music to bridge the gap among different sectors of our city.
What is your favorite type of orchestral music to perform, and why?
I love the masterworks; they have stood the test of time; they're challenging to play but the end result can be transformative. However, I also enjoy other types of music we perform. The most recent example is bluegrass music with Michael Cleveland who has toured with the Louisville Orchestra. Playing with a truly amazing musician is a real kick!
Who is your favorite composer or musician?
Brahms
Do you have a Louisville Orchestra or event that is especially meaningful or memorable?
Performing in Carnegie Hall was pretty sweet!
What do you love most about being part of the Louisville community?
For a medium sized town, there's quite a bit to do most of the time; the park system is really great; love the walking bridge across the Ohio; there are a multitude of dining options
What’s something unique, surprising, fun, or interesting about you?
I still try to play basketball twice/week; I run the NCAA basketball pool for the LO; I was once Mayor of a small city
What are some of your hobbies outside the LO?
basketball; gardening; maintaining house and cars
How do you stay connected with the community outside of your performances?
volunteer work; on church board of directors; on union board of directors; musician representative on LO Finance Committee
