Jorge Mester, condutor • Sarah Chang, violin • The Orchestra's opening gala celebrates many of classical music’s most captivating and gifted personalities with highlights of the musical heritage of Leipzig, Germany. Felix Mendelssohn, founding conductor of the illustrious Gewandhaus Orchestra, premiered his much-loved violin concerto with that ensemble in 1845. We are deeply honored to have renowned violinist Sarah Chang with us to perform this work some 165 years later. The world over, some say Louisville was known most for the international broadcasts of the Orchestra’s landmark recordings. In tribute to the Music Makes a City documentary, we proudly mark this program with a collection of essential Louisville connections. Carter’s “Variations” is the most performed work ever commissioned by the Orchestra, and Lutos?awski was the very first recipient of Louisville’s famous Grawemeyer Award for music composition in 1985. We’re thrilled to welcome Louisville native Lee Luvisi – who has appeared with the Orchestra more than any other solo artist in history – for performances on the famed “Emperor” Concerto. Read More
